Weekend at the cabin

I ended up training 10 hours this week. I didn't get in a long run but had a good week with good workouts. Weston and I and a couple of his friends went to the cabin on Friday. Which meant no real workout on Saturday but a very busy tiring day just the same.

Thursday I needed to be in Idaho for work so I tried to get in a workout on the treadmill in the hotel. But when I got there there was some one on it. I did 30 minutes on a very cheap elliptical trainer instead. Thirty minutes was about all I could take. When I got back to Orem I did 1-hr 15 min. in the endless pool. I really enjoy the endless pool because you can get into a good rhythm without having to do turns every 25 yrds.

Friday I did a longer bike ride. I started by taking Izzie (my Dog) for a mtb ride in the steep streets behind my house. It's very fun to watch her run so hard. She seems to really enjoy a good workout. I do need to keep my speed down when I'm going down hill. When we got back I rode out to Sarratoga springs on my Tri bike. I need to get used to being down in the aero position. It' a little more aggressive posture so you need to get used to it.

Thur: 1-28
Run: (elliptical Trainer) 30 Min.
Swim: Endless pool 1 hr 15 min

Fri: 1-29
Bike: 2hrs 40 Min (50 of which was on the mtb)

Sat:
Cabin-snowmobiling

Sun:
Day of Rest

I Missed a Brick but Made It Up

I had planned on doing a Brick yesterday for my work out. A brick is when you do two different activities back to back. The typical brick is cycling then running. I couldn't get myself to get onto the trainer 2 days in a row. So yesterday I went out for a run with Izzie. We went 8 miles. It took 90 minutes because there was about 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground. I ran on the Provo river trail and for most of the run there weren't even any other foot prints. It's very hard to run in the snow but very quite and peaceful.

Today I made the brick up by going for 60 minutes on the trainer followed by a slow 5 mile run in the hilly streets above my house. The run took about 1 hour, not long enough to get Izzie tired.

1-26
Run: 8 miles 90 minutes (snow)
1-27
Cycle: Trainer 60 minutes (actually felt good)
Run: 5 miles hills

Indoor Training is painful

I rode my tri-bike on the trainer for 1 hr 20 min. I think I went as slow as i possibly could have gone. The swim in the endless pool went much better. I think I could go hours in an endless pool. You can just get into a rhythm and just keep going.

Training:
Swim: 40 min
Bike: 80 min.

Here we go again

Lynette and I are in the beginning of training for our 4th full distance ironman. I don't know what we're thinking. Maybe we're just trying not to grow-up. I'm going to use this blog to record my thoughts and training information as we work towards May 1, 2010.

The Ironman distances are the definition of excessive. I know this yet I still put myself through it. First you swim 2.4 miles. Next you ride your bike 112 miles. And last, you run a whole marathon which is 26.2 miles. Many people ask why do you even include the .2 miles when describing the distance of the marathon. My answer: because they are the hardest .2 miles of the whole event. If it were 26.2 miles and 3 ft. I would include the 3 ft. in the description also.

The St George Ironman is going to be an extra hard challenge for me. The only race of any kind that I did not complete was Ironman China. It was 90 degrees and 90% humidity at 8:00 a.m. I don't do well in the heat. I drooped out before completing the second loop of the bike course. I over heated. (someday I will tell the whole story). Needless to say, St. George is in Southern Utah and can get very hot. Another reason it will be difficult for me is the hills in the cycling and running portions of the race. I'm not a little guy. As of this morning I'm 216 lbs. (that's down 9 lbs from 3 weeks ago) and only 5'9". Not a body built for endurance races such as ironman but especially not built for hills. The good news is that there are no uphill sections of the swim.

Today's training:
Weather: mostly sunny
Temp: @ 28 F at the start of my run
Activity: Run
Distance: 15 miles
Time: 3+ hrs. (my watch batteries died (at one point I wished I did))
Intensity: Easy pace for endurance only
Other: It snowed several inches last night so most of my run was in 4-10 inches of snow. It made it feel more like 30 miles (I don't really know what 30 miles feels like because I have never ran that far. But I think I have and idea how it would feel)

Side note:
I had a good weeek of training which included a 3 hour bike ride yesterday, whih made me more tired for today. I wanted to do a short swim today but had no energy.

Totals for the week:

Swim 1.25 hrs
Bike: 4.5 hrs
Run: 6+ hrs
Total: 11.75+ hrs
